all the buildings in new york x

i seem to have stumbled upon lots of lovely new blogs over the past few days ~ i love the fact that no matter how many blogs you already follow, there are always some more loveliness & creativity to find out there. and the strange way in which you find one new thing, that leads to another new find, that leads to yet another new artist & before you know it you've forgotten where you started?

today's lovely find comes via jackie magpie, who i found via twitter ~ oh, the wonderful world of social networking ~ jackie magpie is a wonderful blog written by a collective of creative people, sharing creative things, & these sketches caught my eye. drawn by artist james gulliver hancock, who has set himself the task of illustrating all the buildings of new york city. his sketches take on all forms, some being simple black & white scribbles on napkins, others are more detailed works coloured up in acrylic or ink, but all have a wonderful personality to them.
reading an article posted on his blog, i completely agree with james about one of the things that makes new york special; the architectural quirks & different buildings you find just walking along a single street in new york;

"I really love the architectural details, the funny little cornices, finding little alleyways, I like noticing how things really change on a street in New York. You will have a factory, then a three-storey townhouse, then a little bodega and then an amazingly ornate bank. It's just incredible the juxtaposition. I don't remember seeing that in other cities so intensely, and I like it"

butterflies x

{all images by nabokov}

beautiful drawings to share with you today....Vladmir Nabokov's drawings were intended for his family, drawn on the title pages of novels & given as gifts to his wife & son & other relatives. none of the drawings are of real butterflies, but the images & the names he gives them are drawn from his imagination...a fascinating insight into the man best known as the author of "Lolita".....

*from the age of seven, everything i felt a connection with a rectangle of framed sunlight was dominated by a single passion. if my first glance of the morning was for the sun, my first thought was for the butterflies it would engender...
...i have hunted butterflies in various climes and disguises; as a pretty boy in knickerbockers and sailor cap; as a lanky cosmopolitan expatriate in flannel bags and beret; as a fat hatless old man in shorts*

looking forward to the weekend

today the skies are blue, although clouds are beginning to appear. procrastination seems to be the order of the day, well to be honest it seems to be the order of the week....how many lovely distractions i can find, pinning, blogging, reading lovely blogs, tweeting...oh, & spending many hours spending oodles of virtual cash on etsy...

aren't they lovely, so whimsical...

paper loveliness x

i spent a lovely day in nottingham yesterday, catching up with old friends, drinking copious amounts of tea & coffee & taking in the wonderful artists & craftspeople around the area..... from the chatty, homely, round the table environment of the textile workshop in sherwood, to the gorgeous interiors shop nash {i could happily have bought half the shop had i the money....}, and finally the lovely studio shop of debbie bryan in the lace market area of the town. alongside her own buttons, brooches & knitted loveliness, is work from many other artists, including these beautiful paper creations from jennifer collier.....

it was a very inspiring day

today the bread has been baked, the house tidied, & i'm just debating what to do with some plums that have just been stewed; pie, crumble or smother with a lovely sponge.....choices, choices......

cryptohematology......secrets in my bloodline x

whilst in la i saw an exhibition of steven kenny's work.....it was shown in a small gallery, the glass garage in west hollywood. his work is amazing, so dark & thoughtful, mixing realism, surrealism & symbolism, he questions our detachment & rejection of the natural world in favour for a world of predictability & order
visit the artist's website here....x
